Pino's Apron Gallery 2010

It's now time to start sending in aprons for Pino's Pie Party 2010.

Aprons should be sent by June 21st if possible [Pie Day is set for Sunday, June 27th]. Send to Pino Blangiforti c/o Apifera Farm, 14710 NW Tupper RD, Yamhill, OR 97148.

Aprons? Donkeys? Pie?

Pino the donkey wears aprons in his many stories, because aprons just sassy a fellow up, and they have pockets to carry important things- like hay twine, animal crackers and nails. You never know when you'll need any one of those things.

So readers and Pino fans send us aprons. Some are vintage, some are hand made. We hang them up on Pie Day and people can buy them for $25 [some are worth much more, but people understand it's all for a cause].

This year, money collected from apron sales [and art and lavender] will be divided up to help our favorite places helping senior creatures: Old Dog Haven and the donkey sanctuaries and New Moon Farm and Goat Rescue.

Money collected also helps us put on a private Pie Day later in the year. Last year we hosted a group of hospice workers to come eat pie, commune with donkeys and just enjoy themselves. I haven't picked a group to invite this year, but will post it here when I do [and if you are a worthy senior group, hospital, cancer clinic, etc in Oregon area, email me].

Pie Day is free to the public, and all the pie is handmade by me, fresh ingredients, to be shared with our guests. We do suggest a $5 donation to pay for all that butter!

I sent a birthday greeting to a friend with a Pino puppet...actually the puppet has become so real to me that I can say without hesitation it is now an extension of Pino, and me.

Anyway, the idea has blossomed, and I now have Pino Movies for various occasions- just like greeting cards. At this writing there are three movies available: Pino singing a Beatles's version of "Birthday", Pino singing Neil Young's 'Silver & Gold' and Pino singing a lullaby "Goodnight" [perfect for a 'new baby' greeting].Each movie is about 2-3 minutes and will be about 8 MB, so the recipient needs more than a land line.

Years ago when I first moved to Oregon, I said I someday wanted to do more writing, and make puppets. Hmmmmm.

Holiday lavender pillows

Just fell in love with this retro fabric design, and the teal green instead of the typical bright green, love it.

Each pillow is 12", stuffed with our farm's lavender bud and some filling too. Back of pillow is brushed cotton [flannel] in polk-a-dots. What can be happier than polk-a-dots? A happy monkey face greets you too.

NOTE: the side fabric [here I have red checked cotton] will very depending what scrap I have.

This red monkey fabric is a delight! Soft brushed cotton [flannel] full of monkey shine. Each pillow is 12" or so and is stuffed with our farm's own lavender bud.

The back of each pillow is unique, no two are alike. It depends on what scrap I have on hand.The sides are also embellished uniquely depending on what scrap I have.

If you can't have a monkey, this comes close.

The brushed lite blue cotton [flannel] monkey fabric is soft and sweet, and is on front of pillow. On the back, more polk-a-dot brushed cotton, and a little monkey face. I stuffed these with our lavender bud, and some crushed mint.

Each pillow is about 10" x 8", and all are hand sewn by me and my Bernina. I embellish each pillow slightly differently, but all have the soft polk-a-dot flannel on the back.We are a pesticide free farm, and our lavender and mint are grown with love, and a little sheep fertilizer.

Paco is our resident worrier and guard. If a worm enters the pasture, he knows it, and worries about it. So you can only imagine how hunting season effects him. I urged him to write a Survival guide, so he does.

Pino Dolls!!

I have Pino dolls now! I have my illustration printed by Spoonflower on 100% cotton, and then I make these stand-up dolls, stuffed with our farm's lavender bud.

The illustrated fabric is the same on each doll, but I use different fabrics for the backs. Dolls measure about 7-9" tall. Each is hand sewn by me in my raggedy fashion.Each is embellished slightly differently, but front is always the same illustrated fabric.

The bottom is orange velvet, because donkeys should stand on orange velvet when they can.

I love these, and hope to expand on this idea with other designs.

$10 of each sale goes into Donkey Dreams. I hope to use them too as fund raisers for future raffles for donkeys in need at a sanctuary I have contacted - stay tuned.

Dogs, cats, horses, goats...roosters. I'm open. Prices start at $750 for a 12-14" range and go up depending on size.

Process: A fifty percent deposit, and signed conformation [which spells out price, due dates, terms, schedule] is due before any work begins. Once deposit is sent, you will send as many pictures as necessary [email is fine], and a paragraph, or many paragraphs, about your animal friend.I encourage you to spill your heart out when you sent your written comments about the animal, and can send a list of questions if necessary.

Please look at all the animal portraits in my portfolios ite and familiarize yourself with my work. My goal in my work is to capture the essence of the animal and while I want it to look like your animal, I do not paint in a highly realistic style. You are not hiring someone that takes a picture and recreates that picture inch by inch [and there are many great portrait painters that do that very, very well].

Materials: I will work on wood or paper and you will receive an original. I will often create paintings and drawing and 'layer' them - the result being an original in archival print form. This allows me to do much more in stylizing and concept. See this portrait of Mose as an example.

Once you pay your deposit, I schedule your piece. It will take 4-6 weeks. I do not send you intermediate steps of the painting. You will be emailed when it is finished, make your final payment and the art will be shipped. If you are unhappy with the final, you have 24 hours to reconsider and return it, at your expense with insurance, and you will receive 50% of fee back minus my initial shipping costs, and credit card/Paypal fees.

I tend to do my portraits in a head on pose - but I want to add to my portfolio with full body poses and more. So stay tuned this year while I hopefully make that happen.

"Buttercup the Cow" was created back in '97 and is matted and framed in maple. The frame is 22" x 18". The image is on heavy watercolor paper, acrylic/collage 15" x 11". The words say "Buttercup 1986-1995" and "One of a kind". I have always been fond of her.

Two mini bundles of lavender comes in a cello bag with a recipe suggestion card. We just hang the mini bundle on our spice rack, or you can leave it in the cello bag in a spice drawer. When you're done with the bundle buds, you can toss the stems in your next barbeque.

Well,here they are! The remaining aprons that were donated to Pino's charity pie party in 2008 and 2009.

I want to thank everyone, again, for their wonderful contributions! I am so moved by the way people are getting on board with this,and having fun with it. Each year, I'll have another Call for Aprons [announced here and on the other blogs] sometime in spring. Those aprons will be sold for next year's charity/cause.

So any aprons that sell, now or whenever, always help the cause at hand. [Sales made before August '09 helped put on our '09 Hospice Celebration Day to honor Kaiser hospice workers and volunteers.]

And one more thing...

Please don't feel badly if your apron did not sell yet!!! It doesn't matter, they all gave people joy when they looked at them at the pie day, and they sell through out the year. They are all special, and eventually will find their homes. The crowd this year was not as apron frenzied as last year for some reason, so many wonderful aprons didn't sell.

Pino's '09 Annual Call for Aprons

Pino is hosting his second annual Pino Pie Party on June 21st, 2009, open to the public. We collect money through apron, art and lavender sales at the June 21st pie party so we can host a charity pie party in August [this year for hospice workers-read below].

How you can help or participate:

1]Donate an apron! This was such a hit last year, and fun for all. Aprons will hang on the fence at the event and be for sale {I usually set the price at $10-40]. All sales will help fund our upcoming charity farm event in August, "Pino Pie's Hospice Celebration Day" which will honor the wonderful work of the Kaiser Permanente hospice workers. Not only will we host the event, I also hope to donate a small donation to them - they use donations to help fund acupuncture sessions for hospice patients, as well as volunteer services.

2] You can also donate an 8" fabric square - these will hang at the Hospice Day. People will be able to write poems, quotes, notes or prayers to people they've helped hospice, or people that have hospiced their family members. Once the event is over, I'll gather them in some kind of book and present them to the Kaiser hospice group as a commemorative. OR you can just donate flower sack towels or a yard [or less] of fabric.

3] Live in Oregon? I'm collecting names of reliable people who can serve pie and keep the pie table tidy at either the June 21st event or the August 15th event.

Note: We fund our public Pino Pie Days with our own money, make our own fresh pie and serve it as our treat. People commune with the donkeys, get farm and donkey love, and enjoy the day. We ask visitors to the June 21 public Pie Day to donate $5 a carload to help fund Pino's charity pie parties [like Hospice Day].

Well, what can I say, Apifera Farm understands the skills honed by old, or young, hippies, hence the fabric pocket patch 'Old hippies make good pie'.

I wanted an apron that would wrap all the way around the body, so I made the width of this ample, for those of us who like to eat pie. As a gauge, I'm a size 10+, and the red fabric totally covers my back end. I also wanted functional pockets.

The Daisy Apron [named after one of Apifera Farm's first sheep, Daisy] has one huge pocket on the muslin front, and is sewn so that you get a double pocket. Perfect for stuffing with hankies, or nails, pencils, hay twine, cookies,eggs or hippie flowers.

This Lucia model [named after Apifera Farm's own sweet and sassy Lucia Graciella, the mini donkey] has one huge pocket on the muslin front flap, and then another pocket sits over that, so you get double the pocket. Sweet Dream Cats-Lavender Filled

I just love these "Sweet Dreams" sachet/mini pillows. Each is filed with our farm's lavender bud, and a bit of poly fill for shape.

The cat illustration is one of my copyrighted designs printed by Spoonflower on 100% Kona fabric [very soft!].The back fabric is this sweet Humpty Dumpty pattern in a soft ,dusty pink [all cotton]. To make them even more whimsical, I've given them all little pig tails, and attached a tiny bell.

Rest them on your baby's nightstand, or place in a chair in your nursery. They can make sweet sachets for the diaper drawer too. Lavender is said to sooth and calm, and these cats will send your little one off into sweet dreams.

Original - "Unpicked Apple Tree"

Inspired the way too many apple trees on the roads I see as ai drive around, unpicked, nature's bounty wasted. Although i guess the worms and birds and earth benefit, so that is good. And more trees are born. But I was inspired by a story of a woman who began a network of volunteers who go around neighborhoods and pick the fruit of homeowners, then donate it to shelters. I thought a volunteer core of people who would pick up roadside apples and take them to a donation site for equine rescue facilities, or needy horse people.

Shown here is Pino the donkey taking Grandmère for a ride. Grandmère Chat is all dressed in her hand knit red dress, and lovely scarf, ready for a brisk outing. Pino has dressed in his red sweater, and his little hiking boots so he can travel far and wide, and pulls Grandmère in his cart. Hand made cart is created from Apifera's fallen wood. Wheels do not turn.

Bodies are stuffed with batting, and all clothes are hand made by artist. No two of these creatures are alike. Pino stands 17" tall, and Grandmére is 15". The length of both with cart is about 19".

Filled with lavender bud from our fields [pesticide free], I embellish the sides with scraps of fabric.

NOTE: EACH PILLOW IS EMBELLISHED SLIGHTLY DIFFERENTLY. This one has polk-a-dots on sides, and green sear sucker on back. No two are exactly alike.And I will make them with the scraps and colors I have on hand.
